ATI drivers do not work. Does not recognize the hardware.
EnvyNG will not start (does not recognize the hardware).
However, factory Ubuntu drivers allow full OpenGL window animation and HD resolutions (1920x1080).
Video playback is slow both in-browser and other video software (VLC- skips).
This card worked in previous iterations of Ubuntu, please get a fix out asap!

Hi!!
I'm working on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. There is no way to make 3D work, and better don't try to, because you can find serious troubles, cause you can loose the gnome terminal.
Ubuntu doesn't recognize privative hardware controler for Ati Radeon 9600.
Ati Catalist doesn't recognize the hardware.
Ati homepage drivers doesn't work at all.
EnvyNg doesn't install correct drivers, but if you lost the gnome terminal, it can recover the system at low resolution mode.
Compiz can emulate the 3D, but system gets very unstable and slow.
Thank you and excuse my english.

Ati9600xt wont work on the latest kernel. While using 9.04, I tried to use lower kernel version (few previous version - which supporting Ati 9.3 driver) working, but sacrificing all other extra/latest functionality of my Ubuntu. It was unstable and keep freezing randomly.
Ati doesn't support 9600xt any more. The last Ati driver supported is 9.3 - including XP. This driver won't support VBO too.. which previous version (I can't remember which) did.
Most of the latest games that using VBO will not run any more even on XP. (eg: Company of Heroes)

Drivers other than the ones that came with Ubuntu 9.10 are either none functional or crash the system.
Had to replace Ati 9600 pro with a Nvidia card.
I guess even Linux will make you upgrade your
hardware at some point in time. :(

Not able to get decent drivers for the ATI Radeon 9600 for Ubuntu 10.04 at the moment. Decided to switch over to Nvidia 440MX and even though it is a slower card it improved my performance by a huge amount. Even able to run 3D software with Nvidia drivers. Going to go pick up a new Nvidia card now and moving away from ATI until better drivers are provided for my linux machines
