This was an nVidia driver issue. With beta release 101.41 3/2/07 the problem was resolved and the game should have no issues. nVidia beta drivers can be found in the downloads section of http://www.nzone.com

Slows to a crawl after 6 or 7 turns. I can alt+tab out of the game and back, the software based cursor shows up Task Manager doesn't report it Not Responding, but it can take several minutes for the game to respond (if it does at all).
