This games works on Vista - but you have to turn off the Music. It worked without having to turn on the compatibility mode.

Game loads when 'no music' is selected from the configuration panel, otherwise produces a crash after the loading bar screen.

Using 1.4 patch, Vista 32 bit: Set to XP Service Pack 2 Compatibility, and choose 'disable music' in the introductory 'Options' menu (in the menu before you start the game). The 'disable music' option was the key for me, now it works, including in windowed mode!
