The Sansa is detected as a mass storage device after you switch its USB transfer mode to MSC (default is MTP). You can then copy MP3s to its /music folder.
With the default firmware, the Sansa can only play videos that are MJPEG encoded in a QuickTime container, with a LPCM 11025 Hz big-endian audio track. SanDisk provides appropriate encoding software for that other operating system only and ffmpeg/mencoder cannot produce that exact format without serious glitches.
The best fix is to install RockBox (www.rockbox.org) to gain support for more media formats. While this is virtually risk-free because it installs next to the existing firmware, it may void your warranty.
