OpenShiiva is a VOB to .mp4 converter application. VOBs (Video OBjects) are the format in which movies are stored on DVDs. They are typically encoded with the MPEG-2 video codec and the Dolby AC3 audio codec. OpenShiiva can also read from QuickTime files, though it has only been tested with DV streams, and is known to not work with some codecs.
By converting them to the new .mp4 format, which features the more efficient MPEG-4 video and AAC audio codecs, it is possible to reduce the size of a feature-length movie from around 4.7 Gigabytes to only 1 Gigabyte, without causing a substantial loss in quality. This is similar to the process in which one rips a CD to .mp3 files, cutting the file size by as much as a tenth without noticeably hurting audio quality.
