SafariDockStatus is a small SIMBL plugin that works with Safari v3 onwards and webkit nightlies, to give a tally of unread messages on the Safari dock icon.

Unless you've already cleaned them out, by default Safari has a number of RSS feeds already in your bookmarks database. This will cause the total unread number to be oddly high initially. Open up the bookmarks editor, find the 'News' folder, and clean out the ones you don't want, then the number will only reflect the feeds you're interested in.
