SmallShrink is a Mac OS X application which extracts the main movie from a DVD, and reauthors it to fit onto a 4.7Gb single layer DVD-R.

It is inspired by (but currently is nowhere near as functional as) the legendary DVD Shrink application for Windows, with a little help from the various Linux DVD9->DVD5 guides around the internet.

Advanced settings can be used to tweak the way SmallShrink operates. There are several things that can be changed, described below. Some of these are things you might want to change frequently, others you will rarely/never want to change:

Target: By default, this is DVD Image, which causes a .iso image file to be created. If File is chosen, then individual mpg files are created for each of the selected titles.

Audio Stream: DVDs can have multiple audio streams, each of which have a numeric code. Most English-language commercial DVDs have the main audio track on 0x80, so this default is normally OK. But you can change it if you need to. SmallShrink 0.4 doesn't have any functionality to help you work out which stream you need - this is something I hope to add in 0.5.

Shrink? / Size: Indicated whether the DVD image created should be shrunk to fit the specified size. By default, DVDs will be shrunk to fit a standard DVD-R, but you can change the maximum size, or tell it to never shrink.

Extraction / Demux / Remux method: These specify the tools used to extract the title from the DVD, separate the audio and video (before compressing the video to fit the target DVD) and then recombining them. I find that using mencoder for all 3 tasks is by far the most reliable, although there have been one or two DVDs where tccat/ffmpeg/ffmpeg has worked better. Leaving this option in here is pure indecision on my part - I haven't wanted to remove the tccat/ffmpeg solution that SmallShrink 0.1 and 0.2 used.

Temporary files: You can choose to keep them if you want. Bear in mind that this will require a lot of disk space though.

Requirements:
OS X 10.6 or later
